Error Code 5461
Message Displayed: “You may not create ASINs for this brand. Please review our ASIN Creation Policy here: ASIN Creation Policy.”
This error occurs when attempting to list a product that belongs to a brand already registered with Amazon’s Brand Registry. Amazon’s policy requires that branded products use the GTINs (barcodes) assigned to the brand owner to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
For example, if you are listing Samsung earphones, you must use Samsung’s GTIN, not one issued by a third party.
If you are the brand owner or are using Amazon’s Brand Registry and still encounter this error, please refer to Error Code 5461-1 below.
Error Code 5461-1
Message Displayed:
“You are using UPCs, EANs, ISBNs, ASINs, or JAN codes that do not match the products you are trying to list.”
Amazon uses GS1’s GEPIR database to verify the connection between brand names and GTINs. This error typically occurs for two reasons:
- You are listing a branded item using your own GTIN instead of the one linked to the brand on GEPIR.
- Your company is brand-registered, but the GTIN being used was not issued directly by GS1.
Solutions to Resolve Error Code 5461-1
If Listing Branded Products (Not Your Brand):
- Update the Brand Field:
- Enter your company’s name in the “Brand” field.
- Mention the actual brand (e.g., Samsung) in the product description.
- This prevents Amazon from cross-checking the GEPIR database.
If You Are the Brand Owner:
To list under your brand, you must prove brand ownership. Amazon may require the following documentation:
Product Images: Show the brand name permanently affixed to the product.
Packaging Images: If the product doesn’t display the brand, submit images of the packaging with the brand name clearly visible.
Manufacturer Letter: Provide a letter from the manufacturer or yourself (as the brand owner) confirming that the GTIN is valid for the product.
Letter of Affiliation: Request a Letter of Affiliation from Barcode Savers (Reitec LLC). While this letter has been accepted in some cases, it is not guaranteed.
Recommendations for Brand-Registered Sellers
Amazon prefers GTINs sourced directly from GS1 for brand verification. If your brand qualifies for the Brand Registry program, we strongly recommend acquiring your GTINs directly from GS1 to streamline the process.
If you choose to use reseller-issued GTINs, additional documentation or methods may be necessary to verify your brand.
Workaround: Listing Without Immediate Brand Verification
If you cannot provide the required documentation right away, you can temporarily:
- Use “N/A” or “TBA” in the “Brand” field to list the product.
- After the listing is live, update the brand information in your Seller Central account.
